چکیده

Introduction Ion therapy allows a high precision, tumor conformal dose application but it is very sensitive to density changes along the beam path. Intra-fractional tumor motion due to respiration increases the risk of an incorrect irradiation and thus requires a reliable dosimetry as it was done by means of 3D in-beam PET for more than 400 patients at the experimental heavy ion treatment facility at GSI Darmstadt. A new beam delivery system for tracking moving targets with the scanned ion beam has been developed at GSI [1] and first experiments have shown the feasibility to correct the in-beam PET measurements for target motion [2]. Now the potential of this new 4D in-beam PET method for detecting possible malfunctions of the motion compensated dose application is under investigation.

Investigation of tumor motion influence on applied dose distribution in conventional proton therapy vs. IMPT a 4D Monte Carlo simulation study

Background: in radiation treatment of moving targets located in thorax region of patient body, the delivered dose does not match with the planned treatment, resulting in some over and under dosage in the tumor volume, as a function of motion magnitude and frequency. Several efforts have been done to investigate the target motion effects on dose distribution in the target and surrounding normal ...

Simulation of beam record data for 4D dose calculation

Treatment of moving targets can result in local over and under dosage due to interference effects of the beam application and the motion of the target. First experimental studies [1] as well as theoretical works [2, 3] showed that multiple irradiations with an accordingly reduced dose per irradiation reduce these inhomogeneities due to averaging effects. If the multiple irradiations are perform...

On the difference of 3D and 4D in-beam PET for a periodically moving target

From 1997 to 2008 the treatment of more than 400 patients with C ions at the experimental heavy ion treatment facility at GSI has been successfully monitored in vivo and in situ by means of 3D in-beam PET. The promising clinical results of the ion therapy for static tumor entities encourages to apply it to more frequent ones like lung cancer. Due to the sensitivity of the ion range to density c...

Influence of a point source motion in PET images and its compensation

Introduction Positron emission tomography (PET) allows to assess the relevant parameters of the applied dose distribution in ion beam therapy. It has been clinically implemented but only for the treatment of static targets. The planned application of hadron therapy to intra-fractional moving tumor sites demands an upgrade of the dose monitoring system in terms of regarding the shifted decay loc...

Optimal Observer Path Planning For Bearings-Only Moving Targets Tracking Using Chebyshev Polynomials

In this paper, an optimization problem for the observer trajectory in the bearings-only surface moving target tracking (BOT) is studied. The BOT depends directly on the observability of the target's position in the target/observer geometry or the optimal observer maneuver. Therefore, the maximum lower band of the Fisher information matrix is opted as an independent criterion of the target estim...
